:''The vessel's bridge is longer than it is wide. There are two stations to fore, operations and helm, both of which are also down three steps from the next station, the captain's chair. Behind the captain, along both sides, and a few steps higher, are the engineering, tactical, damage control, and auxiliary stations.

:''Illumination is provided along the floor boards, and from an elongated disc in the ceiling. The colouring of which can change with the status level of the vessel.

:''A viewscreen adorns the forward bulkhead, above the front two stations.

Ramirez grins to himself. "Remember when I was talking about relative bearing earlier? Look at relative arcs. That means the nebula stretches from our 231 to our 292. If it goes past the nose? We'd run into it." He looks back to Hayes. "So, Ensign. It's my understanding that you took issue with how I handled the impending ambush on the combined DS3 and Coleman crew. Specifically, you felt that my statements at the time were inappropriate. Is that accurate?"

"With all due respect sir, that was a private conversation with my commanding officer.  I don't wish to discuss it with you.  You can order me to, but you'll have to throw me in the brig, which is fine."  Randy shrugs, delivering this all with the level of drama of undressed steel cut oats.

Ramirez mmms softly. "A conversation she saw fit to bring up to the captain, which then came to my attention. Therefore, it's no longer private. Perhaps you should consider something. I have several years of tactical and security experience at this point. I've been wounded on multiple occasions. I've been involved in many altercations at this point."

He turns slightly in his chair. "Also? Whatever you may think about my, Ensign Hayes, I am a reasonable man. I would be happy to explain to you precisely what I was doing. In fact, it would, perhaps, benefit you to consider that there might have been more to the situation than me running my mouth out of anger. Especially considering our relative experience." He shrugs.

"My point is simply this: if you have a legitimate question about anything involving actions taken by myself or any other member of this crew, I encourage you to ask them, with the intent of conducting a thorough after action review. No decision is perfect, and every action should be defensible."

"That doesn't make your behavior less disturbing sir.  It makes it more disturbing.  No one else saw the need to do what you did.  I don't even think it was necessary.  So I don't think whether or not you are threatening the lives of people has anything to do with needing to do it.  Outside of space, it's actually against the law to do this to people.  So why do you get to make people who will be detained by us think you are going to kill them?  That escalates the situation and makes it more unsafe for everyone else handling the prisoners...sir."  Randy keeps her eyes on her console.  "Did you ever consider that?  Before you assigned me to help?  I don't know if you've noticed but I don't clear five feet, and I don't have combat experience on my record.  So yeah, I'm sorry if I don't feel comfortable serving under a man who finds it necessary and appropriate as a Starfleet officer and a line officer to go around threatening civilians and/or criminals their lives.  I know I'm not Miss Starfleet, but I sure as hell didn't join up for that crap.  You don't seem reasonable at all.  Those are not the actions of a reasonable man.  I don't have any question with how you acted.  I saw how you acted, but it's not appropriate for me to skip my chain of command and talk to you directly.  Nor was I trying to tattle.  I was trying to figure out if I needed to worry about an illegal order one day coming my way, or me seeing you do an illegal thing and being morally and oathbound to stop it.  So, I was trying for it to ot/ concern you sir, because I know it won't change.  I had no intent to question your orders.  I shouldn't /have/ to question your behavior."

The vessel drops out of warp.

Ramirez glances to Nimah. "Broadcast over starfleet: Deep Space 3, USS Coleman.  We've arrived in system as part of our patrol. Do you require assistance at this time?"

Ramirez looks back to Hayes. "Ensign? How much security and tactical training do you have?"

Nimah has been keeping quiet, but at the request she nods. "Yes sir."

Randy waits till there is a proper gap for her to reply, not wanting to disrupt operations.  "Like I said.  I don't see how threatening someone's life is necessary for anything we were doing, and I only see how it actually made it more dangerous, but I'm open to learning.  But truly, I'm fairly certain level of training here is irrelevant, and I've had just as much as any other person in Starfleet's Engineering Corps.  Also, I've been in life threatening situations before, if that's what you think is going on.  I'm not green to danger sir."  Randy tap taps on the console.  "We're supposed to be explorers sir, not thugs, so when someone acts like a thug, they think Starfleet is full of thugs.  How could I blame them?  Starfleet is acting thuggish.  See some of the other problems here?  See why I was concerned about my place here?  I get we have a lawless element here, but you haven't yet actually told me how threatening a life helped us tactically in that situation."

"You are free to harbor whatever opinions you might have about me, Ensign. Starfleet is an organization that gives you unlimited freedom where your own thoughts are concerned. However, as soon as you voice those thoughts, in the manner which you just chose to do so, you are creating a situation where good order and discipline become impossible to maintain."

"You seem convinced of your own certitude. In the course of attempting to assassinate Commander Choma, and then stating flatly that they intended to do so again, we were left no choice but to engage them. We were, further, outnumbered. In my view, intimidating and scaring them into surrender was preferable to doing violence upon them and risking further injury. In fact, they DID surrender, so my effort to intimidate them into doing so was successful."

"I do not cause injury to another sentient being without reason to do so, Ensign Hayes. My tactics saved lives and injury to the people we were engaged with, as well as to us. Frankly? You don't know what you're talking about. Perhaps you should consider that you're incompetent, where matters of security are concerned, before making any more pronouncements."

His voice is cool, careful, and crisp. "You don't know /anything/ Ensign. Especially outside of engineering. You should meditate upon the depth of your ignorance before calling me a thug."

Randy's voice doesn't change a milimeter.  "No.  I'm not the one who acted that way.  I confided what I thought was inappropriate behavior befitting a starfleet officer to my commanding officer privately, so as to not hurt the chain of command and compromise anything.  If it was something worth raising up, she would, but that's not my call.  That /is/ the correct protocol.  I voiced facts and concern, not hearsay. That is correct protocol.  I trusted my chain of command.  And now, because my chain of command doesn't like it, you are bringing it up on the bridge yourself, in front of everyone.  I'm not the one undermining command sir.  I chose private and respectful channels to confide.  You're the one dragging it out on the bridge and undermining your own command.  I'm just answering your questions since you seem so concerned about it.  You could have talked to me privately, but you didn't.  You made a spectacle of it.  You're dragging me out to be flogged publicly.  That's not me.  I still don't see how threatening people's lives did anything tactically.  You still haven't answered my question.  How can I know anything if you won't tell me anything.  Also, I didn't call anyone a thug.  I talked about acting like thugs and other people surmising we, as in Starfleet, are thugs.  I don't need to be competent in security to know that was unethical and against the law in many exocolonies and lots of home worlds.  Because I'm also a citizen, and citizens can't do it either.  It's even worse when someone with power does it.  So no.  I disagree with you.  Even if I don't know a lick about security, I know enough to report what I did, to be concerned by your behavior."  Her voice never rises and she simply, finally, turns her gaze over to the Lieutenant.  "I don't think it will help to meditate on knowing nothing, so I think I'll skip that."

Ramirez says, "Log off your console Ensign Hayes. Leave the bridge. Don't come back." He looks back to the viewscreen. "If you wish to push this up the chain of command further, you are free to do so, per Starfleet Regul ations. Now, go."

Ensign Hayes taps a control on Engineering Console.

Randy doesn't argue the way Ramirez paints it.  At this, she does what she is told.  She no longer discusses it, and doesn't stop to correct him about anything.  Tap, tap-tap tap.  She gives him her customary little dip of her head, "Sir."  Then turns and exits the bridge.

Ramirez doesn't responds to Ensign Hayes as she moves off. Instead he looks to Nimah. "Ensign Nimah. Please plot a course towards Prouf. Same profile, slew 50,000 light seconds short."
<br><br>
There's a whole lot of Nimah watching her console Very Closely. Those dials and readouts are Examined. In detail. Twice. "Um. Yes sir." She glances over to the XO briefly and then back to her console.
