Berton steps into the mess with you. It's currently fairly quiet as the ship is running with a skeleton crew at the moment. He motions to the replicator. "What will you have?"
Chandler follows in along with him, humming softly before looking ahead. "Oh um....I guess just a salad with steak on it if it can." Smiling she nods a bit then.
Berton nods and orders up two of the same. "Drink?" He asks, getting himself a coffee.
Chandler blinks then seems to think. "Um..." Be good...its lunch girl. "I think just some coffee too would be good."
Berton nods again and orders up a second cup of hot coffee. He brings the two trays over to a table. "So how are you? We've not bumped into each other the past week or so."
Chandler nods as she raises her brow but follows him to the table. Sitting down she nods as she leans back. "I'm doing good. Commander has been keeping me busy it seems...." A beat. "....seems I am useful." Chuckling she then nods. "How have you been?"
Berton chuckles, "I'm sure you are very useful..." he is about to tell you not to self deprecate, but he stays silent on that. "Oh busy as well. It's been a lot of work getting the Antietam's systems back working. The repair work was great, but so much of it has been sitting idle for years."
"Well I'm sure that you have a lot to get back in order. Hopefully I'm not dragging you away from stuff...." Sybil chuckles a bit as she then picks up her fork, stirring up her salad a bit. "I won't keep you too long."
Berton smiles, "It's good to take a break from time to time, keeps the mind fresh. But she will keep too, been sitting for years... some of the crew are in a hurry to get home, but we haven't found everyone yet either so until we do, there is no rush."
"Yeah I figured....." Taking a bite, she covers her mouth as she speaks. "I'm hoping we can get this done sooner than later. I'm hoping we can get a lot done soon...." Sighing, Sybil sits back then. "So....." A beat as she takes another bite. "You wanted to get to know me so....what would you like to know?" A smile tugs at her lips then.
Berton asks after your 'done soon' comment, "Are you in a hurry?" He smiles between bites, a bit of lettuce stuck in his teeth. "Anything you're willing to share."
"Hurry? No. I just don't think those still alive should continue to be out there any longer than they already have is all....." Sy shrugs then chuckles a she points at his teeth but continues. "I suck at talking about myself, you know. Just ask me stuff. Not sure what you really want to know...."
Berton nods, "Quite so. I heard there was a planet not far from here where a half dozen or so of the old crew are reported to be." He licks his teeth feeling the lettuce then picks it out semi-discreetly. "How is... Kellen? How did you two meet? Are you happy? Any grandkids in my future?" He looks around the mess, completely empty. "There is something I want to discuss with you and your Commander as well. Both of you, or if you want to pass the information on. As we collect all the old crew I think this needs to be brought up, if only in a limited circle, but..."
Sybil nearly chokes as she hears the question about kids than chuckles. "We met on the Phoenix. If anything I was a pain in his ass. I never chased a man my entire life....until he came along. I don't think we actually started dating....I think it was when I almost got choked to death or when he thought I had gotten blown up by accident." Shrugging a bit she then sighs a bit. "As for kids? Uh....if there are? Not anytime soon." She chuckles before she hears his next statement. Her brow raise as she leans forward slightly. "I mean....up to you. Want me to call the Commander over or I can just...play delivery girl."
Berton asks, "Choked to death? I don't want the details, I don't think. But, obviously physically you are ok, but that must have been traumatic. Are you ok?" He smiles about the kids, "I was attempting some humour, but also not opposed to the idea as well." he shakes his head, "You're a senior officer aboard the Phoenix. I'm not telling you simply as an errand girl." he licks his lips. "You may have wondered why I still use this name, instead of the one your mother was kind enough to me to bestow on you." He pauses, "My mission isn't over yet."
Traumatic is one way to put it....bloodwine helps with that....." Sybil grins a bit then chuckles a bit as she pushes her hair out of her face. "...bad joke....let's just say I got in a fight....I was almost winning at one point...." Sighing she then purses her lips at his words. Shifting in her seat she nods a bit. "Yeah I figured....." Propping her head up she licks her lips then. "So what is going on, dad? I'm not...." A beat. "I'm nosey....and I can dig into stuff....but I know when I find stuff above my pay grade so what the hell is going on?"
Berton grins at you, "You like bloodwine? How did that come about? You don't see it often in the Federation." he nods solemnly, "Well I hope you have the support you need should the experience ever troubles you." He licks his lips again, "I don't have the clearance to share all the details, but there are a couple persons of interest in the investigation. Officers from the Antietam. I'd ask that you and your crew inform me if and when they are recovered. I'll send Sam a formal request, so this is all on the up and up. He knows the particulars anyways, or at least has access to it."
Chandler raises her brow a bit before tilting her head. "Huh...." That's when she sits back and nods. "So...." A beat. "I was wondering if it had to do with someone on this ship...." Chuckling a bit she glances off to the side. "You know....." A beat. "When I was younger....I was in trouble a lot. Call it acting out....or whatever....but I ran with a group of not so great peeps. I was in fights....breaking into places, computers, stuff like that. I have a scar thanks to one little gang incident that was a wake up call....sort of." Taking a deep breath she then looks over at him. "....so tell me.....is that why something was missing from the Antietam files and not the copy I made?"
Berton nods about your youth, "Your mother sent me a letter once, she was really worried about you back then. I'm glad you pulled through it. Sometimes it takes those kinds of experiences to really shape us." he nods about the files, "The computers aboard the Antietam were damaged, I didn't want to take the risk someone with access, one of the crew, could get their hands on the report. Even if it wasn't the two officers in question, the kind of information that was in there could... well it's best if handled discreetly, even after all this time."
Sybil listens intently to him, nodding slowly before she looks to the side. "Yeah well....that's why mom put me in fencing....think it would have disciplined me. All it did was teach me how to stab someone better..." Pursing her lips she goes quiet then leans in, picking up her fork against as she starts to eat. "I found a few files....the Fleeter Intelligence one I sent on to Kemper.....that's for the cool kids." Taking a bite she continues then. "Francine had her own encrypted files I hacked into....which makes me wonder more and more about y'alls XO." Another bite. "So who are you looking for?"
"Remind me never to make you want to stab me." David says with a wry smile. He smiles about Francine too, "She was a very smart and capable officer, I'm not surprised she had her own notes on the XO." he licks his lips, "But no point dredging up anything about the XO, he's gone, any further marks on his service record would only serve to hurt his fellow officers." He purses his lips, "Two junior security officers, Pilel and McMaster. They're well trained so I wouldn't confront them about anything. Bring them home, then we can sort it out."
"He wasn't the only one she had notes on, dad...." Sybil raises her brow a bit then. "And yes she was. She was smart enough to encrypt her notes....unfortunately....I've been keeping in practice...." Chuckling a bit she then sighs a bit. "Pilel and McMaster....." Repeating it as if committing it too memory. "Well no offense...but do we want them roaming around the ship?" Licking her lips in thought she nods. "Maybe say we have to screen them and that they showed some markers we need to keep them in quarantine...." Snickering a bit she finally takes a sip of her coffee.
Berton nods, "True enough, and arresting them outright wouldn't be very discreet. But ideally, we need them to confess of incriminate themselves." He smiles mischieviously at you, "Up to pulling a sting?"
Sybil slowly raises her brow as she sits back, a hand moving to her chest. "Now dad....what kind of woman do you take me for...?" With that she grins as she leans forward. "It's not my first rodea....."
Berton grins right back at you, "I hadn't considered it before, but your background when you were younger may play to our advantage." He purses his lips, "But, your fellow officers wouldn't be in on any deception. Are you comfortable with that? Sam would know, he might read in your Commander as well, but beyond that. This kind of work sometimes damages personal relationships." Case in point.
Sybil purses her lips a bit as she seems to think for a moment. Taking a deep breath she just nods then. "Yeah I'm fine. Its not the first time I kept stuff from them." Motioning to him she chuckles a bit. "....case in point." With that she nods then. "And besides....I want to help. People can get huffy.....its fine."
Berton nods, "Well we have to find them first. But in the meantime we can begin to sort out a plan. You don't want to be too brazen, it would look off, but subtelty is good.
Chandler leans back as he nods a bit. "So....." A beat. "Is there a genre of information that we're trying to get them to admit to?"
Berton says, "Oddly enough, smuggling. They were both security so could get things on and off ship without being detected. They were also part of rolling patrols assigned to the same section of the ship, so they could keep other prying eyes away from what they were smuggling while enroute."
Chandler raises her brow a bit as she then tilts her head a bit. "...smuggling?" That's when she chuckles a bit then. "Lovely....then they deserve a good slap upside the head."
Berton asks, "You mentioned Francine had files on other officers? Something relevant to my investigation maybe?"
Chandler chuckles a bit as she shakes her head. "No...." A beat. "But she was curious about you apparently...."
"Me?" David laughs, "Isn't that something. Anything interesting to report?"
Chandler chuckles a bit shrugs. "That you were too nosey for your position and that she doesn't think you're up to bad stuff but that you were up to something.....but I didn't tell you that...."
Berton chuckles, "See, smart." He finishes off his salad and looks to see if you finished as well, so he can clear the dishes. "More coffee?"
Chandler leans back as she nods a bit then. "Sure....." Downing hers she the watches him for a moment then nods. Sighing she lifts a hand to push her hair out of her face. "....I hope medical has been busy...."
"With Tom?" he asks as he grabs the empty dishes. "They need some sort of breakthrough I hear. It might be good to get additional eyes on the problem, a fresh perspective." he sets down a fresh cup of joe for you, holding his in his hand blowing across the top.
Chandler nods as she picks up her cup. "Maybe we can find some of your medical too...." Chuckling a bit she looks down to her cup then. "Thanks." Clearing her throat she looks up then nods. "Anyway.....before I get upset.....anything else you want to know about me?"
Berton smiles, "Yes, but I think we've done pretty well today. Thanks for being open with me. Unless there is something specific you still want to share?"
Chandler shrugs a bit as she takes a sip. "Well....not much else really. You can kind of read what I've been up to apparently...." Chuckling a bit she grins a bit then nods slowly. "I do have a question...." Looking up from her cup she sits back. "....so you had no clue I was in Starfleet?"
Berton says, "I heard you joined the Academy, but the mission I was on, I couldn't look you up, and I never heard if you graduated or not. But you've made a fine officer. How does you mother feel about you following after me?"
"Well....." Chuckling a bit Sybil laughs then. "She wasn't thrilled...at all. She knew why I why I joined....but happy I dumped the guy I was with at the time."
"Oh? Why did you dump the guy, and why was she happy?" David asks, quite interested.
Chandler chuckles a bit as she takes another sip. "He....was part of that crowd I ran in. He's the one that taught me how to fly and some other stuff. In the end he taught me what I wanted and then I....moved on."
The door leading to Out swooshes open.
Lieutenant (jg) Worthington arrives from Deck 2 - Port Corridor.
The door leading to Out swooshes closed.
Berton smiles, "If joining Starfleet is just moving on."
Chandler chuckles a bit. "Yeah well....for me it was. He was a terrible influence....now that I look back on it. I mean he was fine....but terrible habits I started to pick up."
the wooshing of the messhall door announces the arrival of Lieutenant Worthington. He enters in his standard duty uniform, spotting lieutenants chandler and Berton. He makes his way over. In greeting he says, "Hello. I hope you both are well? I was just conducting patrols of both our vessels, make sure everything is going well. Everything appears to be in order. Looks like the repairs to the Antietam have shaped up nicely as well. Get some fuel and your ship should be ready to fly."
Berton shakes his head smiling, drinking his coffee. "Well, sounds like you learned something." He looks up at the newly arrived security officer, "Pulling double duty patrolling both ships? That's dedication." he nods, "She's flight worthy now, but still missing a good chunk of her crew."
Worthington grins. "I have security teams to help, and if we're being honest, the Antietam's slightly smaller than just the Phoenix's saucer section, so it's not too difficult to patrol lieutenant."
Chandler looks up then smiles as she sees Worthington. "Ah....well look at you." Chuckling a bit she looks to Berton then as she raises a brow then looks back to Worthington. "Well....good on you....though not much you can do when we're not right on top of each other...."
Berton grins, "She's small, but agile, and did pretty good for herself. Not to mentioned survived the Qee, even if some of her crew didn't."
Worthington glances around aprpazingly. "Well, maybe a little of this, a little of that. Definitely add some defensive armor like the Phoenix has, and she'd be able to take much more. I have been a firm believer in strong defensive systems. Afterall, you never know who, or even what, you'll run into in the unknown."
Chandler glances over to Berton then back to Worthington a bit. "Well you're ready to completely remodel this ship...." Chuckling she licks her lips before she nods a bit. "Hmm....maybe....if we had the time and crazy amount of resources....." With that she sighs, relaxing in her seat as she takes a sip of her coffee.
Berton says, "From what I have read, that armor tech is still pretty sacred. I don't see them outfitting a ship as old as the Antietam with it. Be easier to start fresh."
Chandler nods as she looks over. "I was wondering. I think once we find those we can, step two is to figure out what's next...."
Berton nods, "Yes, some decisions will need to be made there. Personally, if Sam will have me, I'd like to stay out here. I've caught the exploratory bug."
Worthington considers. "That armor is the wave of the future. You didn't see what it did against the qee fleet, or rather, what that fleet did or didn't do to it." he grins.
Chandler raises her brow at Berton then. "....you want to stay out here?" That's when she grins a bit. "Maybe if the Captain permits it I'll give you a run through of the K'rel...." Chuckling she looks back to Worthington and nods. "It does. However I'd hate to have to go against them longer than I have to."
Worthington nodds. "Their ships really are glass cannons though, first or second salvos, and their weapons are toast. As for any other dangers we may and will face, that remains to be seen, but the armor put on a heck of a performance."
Berton asks, "The bird of prey?" He licks his lips, "And oldie but a goodie. That's your baby?" he chuckles, remembering an earlier question he asked Chandler.
Berton says to Worthington, "It may have ad something to do with the Phoenix armaments as well. Her heavy cannons alone can cause considerable damage."
Worthington grins. "Those, and her photon torpedos, but from my tactical analysis of the qee ships, first systems to take damage are in this order, communications, weapons, and sensors. Those are the most vulnerable."
Chandler nods. "Yeah that's my 'baby'." Chuckling she then sits back a bit. For now she lets Worthington do his thing.
Berton nods, "might be located close to the hull. But those Qee ship designs, no telling which way is front, back, up, or down."
"You forgot right and left," Worthington grins. "Yes, and their omnidirectional capability is vulnerable. But our heavy cannons, not sure if they can put out the same as 16 omnidirectional antiproton beams. Their weapons, while weak structurally, packed quite a punch. You should've seen the Phoenix without armor, took about 10 percent hull damage."
Chandler sips sips sips away at her coffee.
Worthington receives a call on his commbadge which he answers kertly. He rrises and says, "I'm needed in saucer security on the Phoenix, something to do with paperwork. One thing I could do without, administrative bbueaurocracy, but alas. My appologies, and best wishes to you Lieutenant Berton." he makes his way out.
Berton comments, "Interesting fellow. Do you two get along?"
Chandler glances over at him. "Uh....." Looking to the door she chuckles a bit. "....we work together. I keep him at an arms length after an incident...."
Berton asks, "Incident?"
Chandler waves a hand. "Long story short I found out that he was using security systems to see where I was on the ship and the like. At the time Kellen and I had become more serious and he made comments about tracking me to his room. So....." She shrugs as she takes a sip. "....I told T'Shaav she better handle it or I'm going to beat the shit out of him."
Berton purses his lips, "Unfortunate." He chuckles and shakes his head about the beating up part.
Berton says, "I should get back to the bridge. This was really nice Sybil. Thank you. I hope we can do it again soon?"
Chandler sighs. "I wasn't happy....at all. It took everything in me to not punch him then...." Chuckling she then nods a she stands, finish off her coffee. "It was. Thanks...." Smiling she nods a bit. "Let me know when you want to talk a bit. I'm just working on some stuff but can spare for food. And...." A beat. "...yes lets do it again. I'll be in touch....I have to talk to Kemper soon anyway...."
Berton smiles and waves.
