Valeris is looking after operations with a half dozen other crew.

Davis steps off the turbolift and takes a brief look around. She looks a bit confused as to where to go for a few moments. Eventually, she spots the commander's office, but still not quite sure, she approaches Valeris. "Excuse me, ma'am. Is that the commander's office? I just got posted here, and I'm here to check in with Captain T'Shaav."

Valeris turns up from her console and smiles, "Welcome aboard Lieutenant." She nods, "Yes it is her office. Proceed to knock on it, and she'll respond when available."

Davis flashes a grateful smile, adding a quick, "Thank you," before heading off to do just that.

You trigger the door chime in Commander's Office.
Knock from Commander's Office: Come.

Valeris nods and waves.

Davis spends a brief moment straightening her uniform before heading inside.

The door leading to Commander's Office swooshes open.

The Vulcan captain is studying reports on two simultaneous screens. She looks up.

Davis walks in holding a PADD. She's wearing an easy smile, but there's a hint of nervousness in her demeanor. Her greeting is formal and to the point. "Lieutenant Davis, reporting for duty, ma'am."

"Lieutenant," the Vulcan greets, gesturing to a chair. "Sit down."

"Thank you," Davis replies, taking the offered seat.

"You went to postgraduate school, and now have your doctorate in which area, exactly?" T'Shaav asks.

"I thought you might ask, ma'am," Davis replies. "My dissertation was titled The Agricultural Implications of Geologic and Atmospheric Terraforming Techniques. If you wish to review it, I have a copy of it on this PADD." She pauses for a moment before elaborating. "I served as a botanist in the fleet before I went on an academic sabbatical. That's really my chief expertise, though I have an interest in agricultural and meteorological science, as well." And then there's another pause. She seems about to say something more, but her hesitation wins out, and she remains silent.

"I may review it in future, Lieutenant. For now, that tells me what I need to know. You will need to report to Doctor Telula before assuming your duties. But I am assigning you as chief science officer of this station."

Captain T'Shaav taps something in on the computer interface panel.
The LCARS panel beeps at Captain T'Shaav as they modify the ship's roster.
Your service record has been updated.

There's a flicker of surprise on Davis's face when she hears the phrase "Chief Science Officer," but a moment later, she has her composure again, wearing her previous smile. "Yes, ma'am," is her reply.

T'Shaav says, "Good. Get up to date on the agricultural crisis on the planet and the situation aboard station. Short version, it involvesagricultural equipment and agriculture on the planet. FOrnow, I am sending you to Doctor Telula for your intake physical. Questions?"

"You've mostly answered my first question," Davis replies. "I was going to ask about the agricultural crisis I had heard of, since I imagine that's part of why I was recalled to duty and posted here. My other question relates to something I saw on the way to this meeting. There were protesters in one of the park areas. Is that related to this issue? I think it best to ask if this is a socially or diplomatically delicate issue, since sometimes the reports don't quite capture that nuance."

T'Shaav nods. "It is both. In brief, the Bajoran scientist in our brig is aledged to have stolen agricultural technology from Vulcan, and Vulcan seeks to extradite him on a charge of theft. THe technology is at work on the planet, but we have reason to believe that Doctor Tikar does not know all that needed to be known to run it ompletely successfully. you will be examining those data. Additionally, Vulcan is willing to send specialists and more technology, pending a request from the Bajoran government. Many Bajorans want Tika released, and the matter is a flashpoint just now."

Davis nods slowly, her expression suddenly more business-like as the full gravity of the situation is revealed. "So we're stuck between a proverbial rock and hard place diplomatically, on top of needing to resolve the agricultural issue for humanitarian reasons. How much access will I have? I'm not sure how sensitive access to him is, diplomatically or security-wise, but I'd be interested in speaking to the scientist in our custody, if that's possible."

"You may certainly speak with him, Lieutenant. He is in the brig on level 9. I wish to make progress on multiple fronts, and Lieutenant Ko has been trying to work with him. She is a Bajoran, and by profession, a flight control officer. Having a scientist here can only help."

Davis nods slowly. There's a hint of a sad look on her face as she thinks on something. "Hopefully we can find some common ground," she says, her previous expression giving way to a more neutral one. "If I may, I have one final question. What's your take on the Vulcan position here? Why do you think they're pursuing this matter in this way?"

"Because, they aledge, that when Dr. Tikar departed Vulcan, he absconded with some of their agricultural equipment, the nanites. Strictly speaking, the doctor has not flatly denied this. The Vulcans consider this matter a legal one, a matter of theft, and wish to extradite him to Vulcan to stand trial. however, they also wish to aid the people of Bajor and are awaiting official request from the Bajoran government."

Davis is silent for a few moments after, her gaze distant. She seems to be thinking on what was just said. Eventually, she musters a smile. "I understand. Thank you, captain. That's everything I had to ask. Shall I head to the infirmary to get cleared?"

T'Shaav says, "Yes, get that done soonest, and you may begin. Welcome to the Bajoran sector, Lieutenant."

Davis stands from her chair, nodding one final time as she adds a deferential, "Captain," and heads out.

Davis exits the commander's office. She lets out a slow breath as she looks down, something apparently on her mind now. And then she puts her usual smile back on and heads for turbolift. She gives Valeris a polite nod on her way, but doesn't say more.
