- Building A <Gavogantu VI>
- This large enclosed structure is separated into multiple different areas. Each area clearly defined for manufacturing different items.
- Workers are busy, but also seem disorganized. There are incomplete parts left laying around here and there, with no one seeming to know what to do with them.
- The constant hum of machinery makes conversation difficult, but also not easily overheard.
If Anewan is true to his word, the away team arrives in a secluded section of the manufacturing complex. Although it doesn't remain secluded for long. "You there" a passer bad says in a rather gruff tone. "Don't you have work?"
"We just finished," T'Shaav says, trying to catch the spirit. "What do you need?"
qetlhaH materialises and has barely time for a glance around before, yet again, she is being acosted about work. Well, not just her, to be fair. She glowers. Fortunately, T'Shaav interrupts any comment she might have been
saving.
"Finished what?", the alien asks. "And do you know where these go?" He is pointing at some preformed panels about a meter square, their purpose isn't obvious through observation alone. "Durgh", another voice calls. The alien speaking with you says, "If you can figure out where these go, I'm sure it would help." He turns and leaves.
Samar reaches for her tricorder, but forgot it. She makes a face.
Sybil looks around but as the guy leaves, she ducks down amongst the group. Reaching into...somewhere, she pulls out her tricorder to do a quick scan before tucking into said place.
T'Shaav eyes the pannels. Of course, she suspected someone would have a tricorder. So she arches an eyebrow at Chandler and waits for her findings as the Vulcan walks over to the nearest pannel.
qetlhaH, too, is missing her tricorder, and balls up her hands with a glance at the sky as if hoping it might magically provide one. Alas, no. She looks around. "What are they trying to build here?" She eyes the panels, then steps over to examine another loose part. "What a mess. How do they get anything done?"
There is a loud explosion from another part of the building, followed by screams, then people running from that direction. A Terran male comes out of the office and heads towards the explosion.
Sybil jumps up after her scan then goes wide eyed. "....crap."
"We will have to be careful," T'Shaav says to her team. "We are still undercover. Let us go see if we can investigate or quietly lend a hand."
qetlhaH gestures towards the Terran as he emerges from the office. "Look." Her voice is low. "Maybe he knows more than we would find out by just looking."
The Terran is out of sight as he rushes towards the explosion, but his direction of travel is obvious.
T'Shaav starts determinedtly after the Terran.
qetlhaH breaks into a jog and follows the Terran, eyes peeled.
Sybil moves along with the others.
Samar follows along too until you reach the site of the explosion. One of the pieces of equipment is on fire. A few people, including the Terran man, are trying to put it out, but there are no fire extinguishers, and water is scarce.
"Is there anything here that could serve as a flame retardant?" T'Shaav asks, dropping back to ask Chandler, she of the tricorder, the question.
A few people were hurt in the explosion, others killed, their bodies laying prone on the concrete floor after being strewn from the blast area.
"Supply it from the Callisto," qetlhaH suggests pragmatically, crouching to examine an injured alien with her deeply limited Starfleet-issue medical knowledge. "Otherwise we'll be here all day if we don't get killed when something else ignites. They clearly can't do it themselves."
Sybil glances over and murmurs. "And then we'll out ourself immediately if stuff just appears." She looks to T'Shaav as she starts moving to the injured then. "There has to be like....something or else screw it and go for it."
Samar points across at another section of the facility. "They're forging over there, probably in sand. If we can get some, put it on the fire?"
T'Shaav was about to waylay chandler for something, but she changes her mind and starts moving rappidly that way.
The Terran male sees these unfamiliar faces running to and then away from the fire. He wonders what's going on then clues in and joins in getting some sand.
qetlhaH leaps up and over her previous focus, IE the alien, in one movement, grabbing a large bucket on her way and strewing mechanical bits across the floor as she empties it. If anybody trips on that, she didn't do it. She nods at Nevabi as she passes and scoops sand from its container into her more portable version, then turns back around to elbow and manhandle her way through the crowd towards the machinery, clearly assuming the others are behind her. She hesitates as she comes face to face with the dry heat, but hefts the bucket on her shoulder and goes for it anyway.
T'Shaav grabs a couple containers of the stuff in each hand and heads back towards the fire. She starts spreading it over the worst of the blaze. Maybe more sand than necessary, but better more than less.
Sybil continues to pull those injured and still alive out of harms way.
"I'm Samar." Samar says to the human as she grabs up some sand. The human isn't sure why introductions now are needed but replies, "Dexter. Thanks for helping." he hefts up a bucket of the sand and runs back towards the fire. Onlookers aren't really sure what to do, most seem too scared to get involved, but also there is no one directing them on what to do. They seem lost, and even in this dire need, unorganized.
Sybil looks up as she's struggling to move people. Looking at them standing around, she calls out. "Hey don't just stand there! There's people still alive that need to be moved! Or go get some of that sand!" She's so helpful.
T'Shaav begins barking commands at those standing about, directing them, or trying to, into a sand bucket brigade while she continues carrying.
Because of her relative position, qetlhaH ends up in the front of T'Shaav and Chandler's makeshift working line if and when it develops, heat-blasting her face while she and a few others throw the proffered buckets of sand. "How did this happen!" she yells over the noise at the nearest smart-looking face, helpfully Dexter. "Is there anything else here that might explode if the flames spread?"
"Probably", is Dexter's response, "Much of the machinery is in disrepair." He points a couple of oil drums about 40 meters away. "Hydraulic fluid. It's safe so long as the heat doesn't get too high." He is part of the line of people now that are passing bucket upon bucket of sand towards the fire.
T'Shaav chivvies the last stragglers into helping. Either tossing sand or helping move the injured. She inspects the fire site to see how much work might be left.
Sybil frowns a bit as she smiles as hopefully people are helping move. Exhaling a bit, she pushes her hair out of her face as she looks around. "How heavy are the barrels? Are they able to be moved out of the way?"
qetlhaH eyes the barrels with deep distrust, accepting another bucket of sand and hoisting it to throw over the fire, watching it smother flames where it falls. "Your people will need medical when this is done," she adds. "Those facilities are in disrepair too, aren't they."
Another human runs up from the direction of the office. When Dexter sees him he says, "Titus, I told you to stay with her, don't leave her alone, not now." Titus only wanted to help, but nods noting the fire is coming under control and heads back towards the office. Once Titus is out of sight, Dexter nods to qetlhaH, "We have none, wish we did."
"A problem?" T'Shaav asks, pointing off the way Titus ran.
qetlhaH grunts and tosses another bucket. "Do you have a prisoner?" she asks with obvious interest, this obviously being where her mind immediately went.
Sybil looks around a bit, listening now.
"Prisoner?" Dexter shakes his head dismissing the remark as way off. "No, she's just really important." The fire is nearly under control, and Dexter takes a moment to see who might have been killed in the explosion, and who might need help.
qetlhaH pulls the person behind her in line forward, depositing her in the hot seat as it were so she can keep up her conversation with Dexter, now that the fire is less of an immediate threat. "Why so?" she asks. "Is she the ..." she struggles for a convenient and descriptive word. "overseer here?" Were they actually workers here, she would know more about the structure of things here. But she doesn't think about that.
T'Shaav continues pouring sand, since qetlhaH has asked the most relevant question.
Sybil licks her lips as she listens now, her gaze cutting to where he ran from then back to this Dexter.
Dexter shakes his head again, "She was", he pauses, "everything. She was here before me, though I knew her from the", he leaves a word out, purposefully. "The machinery here is complex, and few knew how to operate or maintain it. She helped organize people, but she and a few others fell sick. Most of them died, and those left behind have struggled to keep the place operational. Now food is scarce, as we've been short on quota." He asks, "Who are you? I've not ever seen a Klingon here before."
"My name is qetlhaH," the Klingon says. "We're new." She gestures with a sharp movement of her head towards Chandler and T'Shaav. "She and the others are sick, with what? We can help you with that. And maybe with your food problem too." Helpfully, she fails to consult either of her superiors about this and doesn't seem to even have considered it.
Samar leaves the officers to their discussion, and continues to help put out the last bit of the blaze. "Those barrels shouldn't be a worry, the fire is mostly out now."
Sybil blinks over to qetlhaH and then looks to T'Shaav. Yup...she gonna be quiet.
T'Shaav's eyebrow disappears into her hairline as she pours out the last bucket. Dexter's response, she has to hear.
Dexter's eyebrows go up briefly, then back down into a sad frown, "I think she might be too far gone at this point. But if you want to meet her, I'm positive she would want to meet you." He glances back at the fire now all but extinguished. "She is in the office, this way." He motions all of you to follow.
T'Shaav gestures for qetlhaH to lead the way. It's her play, and so far, it's working. She starts walking.
qetlhaH smiles, exposing sharp canine teeth, and drops her bucket beside the next person in line. "Lead on," she says, very politely for a Klingon.
Samar notes the others are making to move off, so she follows.
Sybil follows along as well.
The office is in disarray, clearly showing signs that whoever occupied it hasn't been able to keep up with even general cleanliness. The desk is a mess with various papers and diagrams strewn about in no sensible order, and the air has a slight sick smell to it.
To one side of the room is a simple cot covered in blankets.
Titus is doting over Francine, trying to comfort her. He looks up as the office door opens about to say something when Dexter gives him the ok sign. Francine is currently bundled up in the blankets on the cot, Titus kneeling beside her. Francine coughs.
"You knew her from before you came here?" The Vulcan asks Dexter. She considers. "Do you know what she suffers from?"
qetlhaH blocks practically the whole area of the doorway as she pauses, looking around the room. Then she steps aside to let the others in and goes over to crouch by the cot. Even doing this, she doesn't strike a particularly comforting figure. "Hello," she says bluntly. "This man Dexter has brought us to help you. Are you awake?"
"No help for me I'm afraid." Francine says. Her eyes blinking open slowly, "A Klingon?" She can't focus far enough to see the others. "From the empire?"
Sybil sighs as she moves over. "Shut the door and make sure no one just walks in on us...." Moving over to Kettle she reaches down her shirt and pulls out that tricorder. "Just relax, okay?"
"Not from the Empire," qetlhaH says honestly, with a sidelong glance over at Chandler as she scans. "Why do you think there's no help for you? You've survived this long. You're obviously strong."
T'Shaav waits for dexter's reply, but doesn't crowd the cot.
Sybil purses her lips as she looks at the device then back to the woman. "How do you feel?" She looks to the others. "We can't do anything down here....and if we're going to do something....it needs to be fast. I just..." She squints as she looks back to the doc. "My med stuff is basic. We need to get her up top."
Dexter shakes his head at T'Shaav, "We don't have any medical equipment, and she won't eat anymore, she can't keep it down." A tear drips down his cheek. "She's so frail, we dare not move her." he doesn't answer the first part of T'Shaav's question, not yet.
Francine smiles at Chandler, "Like I'm dying dear." A soft smile crosses her lips. "You're human?" she asks Chandler, now able to see her.
The Vulcan scans the office and notes the closed door. "Let me be frank, Mr. Dexter," the Vulcan says. "You and your colleague here are, unless we are extremely mistaken, late of the starship Antietam. My crew and I are able to provide you immediate assistance, including for your friend here. Do you accept?"
qetlhaH rises and paces back from the bed, shoving one hand into the loose pocket of her pants, nose wrinkled and shoulders tense. "If you don't," she says helpfully, "She wont' be the only one who dies." It's a fact, not a threat, but it sort of sounds like one.
Sybil frowns at the woman's words then smiles as she puts her hand on her hers. "Yeah....I am. I want to move you I just....I don't think you'll make the trip...." At least she's not sugar coating it. "But...I can at least try to get you something for the pain....." Pursing her lips she then looks to Dexter with a sad look. "You want to hold her hand while I try to get something for her?" Standing up she looks to the others then. "Can we hurry up and beam down something for pain....please? Like...now."
"I wouldn't mind seeing the stars from space again." Francine says as her eyes close. With that cue Dexter nods, "We are, or were from the Antietam, but that was a long time ago." Francine speaks again and Dexter goes quiet, "I have some things to tell you, if you will hear the last words of a dying officer?"
"Contact sickbay," the Vulcan says briskly, nodding to qetlhaH. "Tell them to send down anything necessary to these coordinates." She crouches by the bed. "We will hear," she says quietly to the woman. So far, they've not gotten to introduce themselves, but that is maybe less important just now.
qetlhaH has a brief conversation with sickbay and shortly, she is sent down a case of needed supplies. She offers them to Chandler. "The officer on duty knows our situation," she says. "In case you need more." Then she stuffs her hands back into her pockets, head tilted down as T'Shaav speaks with the woman. A frown perses her lips. "Death isn't a certainty." But she doesn't sound very sure.
Francine begins her story, "There were four, no maybe it was five?" she clearly has some trouble remembering that detail, maybe her weakened condition. "We were taken from the ship, from the Antietam, and I mean taken in the blink of an eye, moved to another place. Different than a transporter, but the end result the same." She has a lengthy coughing spree then continues, "I don't know where we were, there were no windows, but it was a horrible place. They were experimenting on people, dissecting them, some not dead yet. Poor Tom, they had him in some sort of device, with things attached to his head, he screamed for hours." She coughs again.
Sybil takes the supplies as she moves back next to the woman. "Speak away...." She then starts to work with giving the woman something for the pain. "...then maybe we can see if we can beam you up and get you to see the stars, hm?" Smiling slightly she looks over at T'Shaav then back to what she's doing. "....if you want that is. Get you a nice view...." Try to at least. At the mention she blinks then looks up. "....wait. Was it the overlords? The Qee?"
qetlhaH's frown deepens. With no medical help to give, she takes to pacing again, always keeping the frail ex-officer in her eyeline as she listens to the woman's unfolding tale.
"Tom Leary," T'Shaav murmurs. "He was the first one we rescued. you will be pleased to know he is doing rather well."
"Dan wasn't the same after that either." Francine continues, "I don't know if it was something they did to him, or if they broke him mentally. But he", she coughs again. "He started acting irrationally. Giving orders that didn't make sense. Sending the Churchill off like that. By the end, he essentially handed the Qee the ship. But I wouldn't have it. That was the last straw for me." She coughs again, a little blood coming out, Titus wipes it up with a practiced hand.
Sybil frowns a bit as she hears that, pursing her lips. "....the stuff we saw on Tom....." She then looks back to the woman, handing a gauze to Titus. "Here." She then speaks to Francine. "The stuff should be kicking in so you can at least be comfortable...."
qetlhaH glances between the other officers for signs of recognition as these names flit by. She pulls a hand out of her pocket to fetch a new cloth for Titus, but then resumes her restless pacing.
"Dan," the Vulcan coaxes. "Do you mean the Antietam's first officer? What was your own post? We have wondered about the decisions of your command staff before the ship was abandoned. Our duty out here is locating and retrieving your crewmates."
"My only shame, a regret?" Francine's eyes close in a lengthy blink as the pain medicine takes hold, "Yes", she says to T'Shaav, then continues, "I'd never killed before, but Dan had gone mad. I should have done something sooner." She coughs up some more blood. "I sent the ship off on autopilot, Tom will know the coordinates, if he can remember, if the Qee didn't get to it first." After a long pause, Francine looks peaceful, maybe sleeping, "I'm glad you finally came. I hope you find them all. I'm sorry I failed them." and with those last few words, Francine is gone.
qetlhaH pauses by the bed to look down into the woman's still face, searching for a pulse or sign of breath. "Is she dead?" she checks with Chandler.
Sybil blinks as she hears that and seems....still. As she listens she the woman, she frowns a bit as she seems to be in thought. AS the woman goes still, she puts her hand to her wrist to check her pulse. Taking a deep breath she just puts her hand on her stomach before looking over to qetlhaH with a nod. Looking to Dexter and Titus she bites her lower lip. "I'm so...so sorry."
The Vulcan stands and faces the two Antietam crew who are left. "I grieve with you," she says. She doesn't add anything to that sentiment.
"So do I," qetlhaH says. "She didn't die well." She steps back again to stand by the wall. "Are there more of you on this planet?"
Dexter asks, "More?" he is confused by the question as he stares at the lifeless form of his mentor, "There are a couple thousand people here."
Titus begins to cry, burying his face in the blankets that cover Francine.
"More of your crewmates from the Antietam," the Vulcan clarifies. "We cannot rescue everyone, regretably, and you and your comrades are the reason we are here."
Sybil seems to stay kneeling by them but slowly moves, picking up her things. "She meant more Antietam I think....." Her voice is soft but there's....something there. T'Shaav had answered too it seemed as she then looks to Dexter.
qetlhaH averts her eyes from the crying Titus, showing a slight flush of embarrassment at this blatant show of emotions. "That is," she says, "what I meant."
Still in a state of shock, Dexter merely shakes his head in response.
Sybil licks her lips as she then moves over to Dexter. "We can beam all three of you guys up if you want...."
T'Shaav casts a glance to Chandler, not being the best at handling tons of emotion either.
"That would be best," qetlhaH says. "You can recover aboard our ship."
Samar, being empathic is quick to comfort both the young officers.
Titus looks up from the cot, his eyes wet. "She has to come too, I won't leave without her."
Sybil nods then as she smiles. "That's why I said the three of you....." She then puts her hand on Dexter's shoulder. "If you have stuff you need to grab....do it. I can help bundle her up and we can get up to the ship, okay?"
"See to it they have everything they need," T'Shaav tells chandler quietly. "Advise me when we are ready for transport." She gets the process started.
qetlhaH stands back, letting the other two take care of this.
Dexter looks around, still a little out of it. "I don't. Let's just go."
Sybil nods and then looks to T'Shaav as she helps Titus. "Alright let's go."
