- Medical Complex - Main Wing <USS Phoenix NCC-170100-A>
- The corridors of the medical complex are spacious and allow for easy access to the various sections. The walls and bulkheads are an unpainted titanium that reflects a natural blue-like tinge. This is accentuated by horizontal and vertical inlays in the walls of a slightly darker blue tinge, creating a half-meter square tile-like effect. The carpeting down the center of the corridor is a deep maroon with a thin band of light-grey trim, then to the walls it is a roughly a half-meter wide mocha-colour. Recessed lighting in the ceiling and along the floor boards provides ample illumination, adjusting in colour as the alert status of the vessel changes. Black, glossy panelling runs intermittently along the bulkheads at shoulder height, allowing access to the LCARS interface.
Sawyer is hanging out in sickbay. Not much going on today, truth be told, apart from a few minor physicals and some hobby-related injuries that are being tended to in various places.
Kellen steps into the medcenter, looking around at the new ship, "Looks like you're doing well for yourself, Doc."
"I do try. What's brought you back in from the cold, my friend? Didn't pick up any funny Cardassian diseases, now did ya?"
Kellen chuckles, "Hopefully not a disease, but something funny in Cardassian space anyway." He becomes more serious, "Has Ensign Ryu talked to you yet about Orias III?"
"O yeah, couldn't do much with a bit of tricorder data," he says. "First thing I wondered about was some kind of biogenic."
Kellen shrugs, "I know enough about biology thanks to the Academy to know something is odd, but not enough to actually dig into it. Which is why I passed on what I found to Ensign Ryu." He pulls out his tricorder, "I managed to stop by and get some samples, since the Ensign mentioned wanting more than just readings."
"Now that is downright neighborly of you," the doctor says. "Let's go to the medlab if you wana do a little science on your samples."
Kellen laughs, "Actually, we should put these in one of the biolabs so they can be isolated from your medical labs if it turns out that something funny turns out to be a disease."
"Yeah? Well let's go to the science section then. It needs use.
Kellen nods, "After you. I doubt that it's on the same deck on this ship as it was on our Phoenix."
- Exobiology Lab <USS Phoenix NCC-170100-A>
- The labs aboard the vessel have similar design queues to one another, but each is configured for a slightly different purpose. This particular lab has evidence of studies in exobiology with stations specifically designed to aid in that particular branch of the life sciences. There are a number of stations along the back wall, each of which can be devoted to a specific experiment or study project. A black, glossy panelling runs along the bulkheads at shoulder height near the entry door, allowing access to the LCARS interface, and tracers set into the bulkheads close to the ceiling indicate the current alert status.
Kellen looks around the lab, "Not bad." He heads over to the scanner with tricorder in hand and prepares to transfer the samples, "I hope this helps the two of you out. The plantlife is growing quite well in that spot on Orias, but it didn't appear to be foodcrop type of growth."
Virtual Positron Imaging Scanner (26202) beeps in refusal at Coil.
Kellen hands his tricorder over to the Doc.
"Yeah, let me see if I can get this damned thing to play nice," Taking the tricorder, the doctor activates the scanner using his shipboard clearances.
The doctor runs the scan. He gapes for a moment at the screen. "Now explain that one to me. Says here the soil surrounding the body is dead and lifeless thanks to the Volan Three power thing. But where ya found the body, well that grass is growin' again. How the hell does that work?"
Kellen shrugs, "Why do you think I collected those scans originally and gave them to Ensign Ryu? It's not something that I can figure out with the resources and knowledge I have." He extends his hand, "May I have my tricorder back? I'd hate to have to customize a fresh one."
Sawyer grins. "O, sure, here ya go."
Kellen chuckles and goes back to looking at the results of the scan on the scanner, "So there's something involving that body, but why that body?"
"Was that body, did that person die there after the, what was it, electrical storm stuff caused by the Volan reactor there?"
"The corpse was the woman who, along with her husband, had paid the mercenaries to kidnap me," Kellen says sadly. "The mercs turned on them, killed the man before I could break free, and I managed to knock out one of the mercs and get my gear back before the one who chased after the woman came back. Then the Cardassian military captured us, and I never knew what happened to the woman until the visit where I got the scans of the plantlife around the woman's corpse."
"So no way to know when she died in relation to what happened to the rest of the biosphere," Sawyer says. "Still, what if the uh, bacteria and whatnot involved in her decomposition revivified the soil around her?"
Kellen sighs and shrugs, "If so, why didn't the corpse of the man and the merc have the same effect?"
"Good question. He wasn't vaporized or nothin'?"
Kellen shakes his head, "Simple weaponsfire killed both, but corpses were left. Buran reported the corpses and I found them when I went back to try to figure out what happened to the woman.
"So, not biogenics. Biogenesis." He snorts. "I'm gonna have to draft Nolan and Ryu and whoever else I can into this mix. I mean, now we know what. But we don't know how."
Kellen glances at the readings on the scanner, "I'm out of my depth on this beyond the basics from the Academy and what I know of chemistry from the Academy and Nalin."
"We all might be," Sawyer says. "I don't know of anything like this. Short of going and finding Spock's kathrah, I'm not sure anyone else would ever have seen this mess."
Kellen frowns at the scanner, "If we can discover what is going on, it might be the key to restore the Cardassian planets and get them from just giving into whoever is stronger at the moment."
"That's the long view alright," Sawyer allows. "Better that than what the Romulans might have planned. Guess you didn't hear about the big diplo meet up we had with 'em?"
Kellen shakes his head, "I've been trying to keep my distance from that situation, though the samples had to be delivered or else I wouldn't even have come aboard the Phoenix while the Romulans are present. Especially if it's Hwiamma that's involved on their side."
"O it is. Commodore Hwiamma now. Squadron and all." Sawyer stretches. "Basically they came to tell us that they're gonna stop the Cardies from antagonizing the Dominion so the Dominion doesn't come to our neighborhood and start breaking things. That's what her senate's ordered her to do by any means necessary. And you know the Rommie idea of any means necessary can be kinda liberal."
"So there's a fleet definitely out here, maybe even already in Cardassian space," Kellen observes. He turns as the door opens, "Hello Ensign. I just delivered some actual samples from Orias and we were looking over the results."
Ryu walks into her lab and hears what Kellen says "Thats good, so what's the outcome?" she walks over and looks over the monitors
"The damnedest thing," Sawyer says. "Read that output." He shakes his head at Coil. "Unless they've moved, one of our boats spotted them on their way in. Guess there somewhere in the system."
Kellen says to Ryu, "As far as I can tell, it's only the woman's body that is doing this, Ensign. Hopefully you and your team can figure out how it's happening so we can fix all the planets."
Ryu looks at the virtual positron and then to Kellen and says "The readings I am seeing are the same readings from the tricorder readings you gave me, however now that we have physical evidence we can perform some more thorough tests"
"Maybe, provided we don't destroy the sample in the process. It's the one sample we got. Plan to work with Doctor Ch'vyron, too," the doctor says. "He's got some fleet med expertese I probably ain't got."
"I'll try to see if I can't find similar things on the next few planets I visit," Kellen says. "Though I'm sure if there was recovery like this, particularly around graves, my sources would've heard of it."
Ryu nods and says "I'll carry out some scans that shouldn't harm the specimin, a few scans across the spectrum" she starts tapping in commands onto the virtual positron scanner
"How's the aid delivery going over all?" Sawyer asks Kellen as the other Trill scientist runs scans.
Kellen shakes his head, "Not well. With Sasot being damaged and no longer doing deliveries, there are planets starving that I can't get to. I've been asked to deliver to planets on the other side of Cardassian space, so hopefully the Federation finally gets off their ass and lets Starfleet start helping."
"And those mercs aren't interfering with you?" The doctor asks. "Catullan, weren't they? That planet's outside Fed space, ain't it?"
Kellen shrugs, "They haven't seen me yet. Tzenkethi have, so I have to be extra careful around them. But I know better than to approach too close to any fleet, so I've had to wait out the mercenaries more than once."
"I wonder what the Tzens have that make them see through those cloaks," the doctor says. "I bet you've thought about it."
Ryu continues to carry out her scans on the samples
Kellen shakes his head, "I have no idea. Common opinion is that nothing can see directly through a cloak, yet their sensors aren't affected by the cloak at all even at long range."
"Wonder if it's just the Klingon cloaks we been using, or would the Roms have the same problem," the doctor muses.
Ryu looks to Kellen and says "Kellen Perhaps you should stay outside Cardassian space for a bit especially if there are Tzenkethi ships roaming around in Cardassian space"
Kellen shakes his head, "I can't, Mr. Ryu. Work must be done, and the Federation won't allow the work I do to be done." He looks at Sawyer, "I have no idea, Doc, though the engineers might have some idea. Though I had considered trying to lure the Romulans into a confrontation with the Tzenkethi, but that was before I was aware of their intended mission."
Sawyer grins. "I don't know. Anyone bet on the Tzenkethi for that one?" He asks. "I wouldn't."
Ryu nods as she sets the scans on automatic and heads over to a padd on a desk and looks it over
"I'd be more afraid of the Romulans already well aware of the Tzenkethi and vice versa," Kellen comments. "And ready to split the spoils of wiping out the Cardassians between them."
"Well Kellen, something tells me the Roms won't get in your way trying to feed people. They're not humanitarians, or is that Romulatarians? Anyway, they've got their own fish to fry. DO they eat seafood?" He wonders outloud.
Kellen frowns, "Oh, they'll get in the way. If Sorod decides they're going to be a threat, he'll spread out his fleet and then I won't be able to deliver anything."
"What fleet? The one he's not using at the moment?" Sawyer says.
Ryu listens to the conversation as she reads her padd
Kellen shrugs, "It's not at Cardassia Prime, though the ThIjuk Stik and Neterok are. Which leaves Torman as the likely other place for it to be, protecting the latinum mines."
"And the Tzenkethi are the wildcard. They get an invite, or are they gate crashing? And for what? That's the big unknown," Sawyer notes.
"I doubt they got an invite, given how the mercenary fleet bounced them out of Torga," Kellen says.
"Nobody loves a pirate. Any luck, ensign?" Sawyer asks the other Trill?
Ryu shakes her head and says "These scans will carry on for the next 24 hours, if theres something there Hopefully the scans will find it"
Kellen frowns at his uplink, "And there's trouble. I think I'd best continue with my work before events here leave me trapped."
"What trouble, Kellen?
Kellen looks at the readings being relayed, "5 T'varo-class Romulan ships just decloaked, and Hwiamma's ship just undocked. If they stir things up too much, I may not be able to get aid to the planets most in need."
Sawyer says, "Better get going, then."
Kellen nods, "Good luck on figuring out the mystery on Orias. If you need anything further, I'll do my best to get it for you if I can."
Ryu looks to Kellen and says "If you're going to head out best be quick I have a feeling we're going to be dragged into action"
