- XO's Office - Saucer <USS Phoenix NCC-170100-A>
- The large, spatious office sports few personal possessions. That the occupant is a Vulcan is evidenced by the deadly-looking lirpa mounted on one wall. The rest of the furnishings are fleet standard issue and include the desk with two chairs before it as well as a seating area near the window.
- Out the viewport: The orange hue of the nearby star can be seen.
Viewscreen (24440)] Svetzvani looks up from her terminal. "Tink here."
"Well, Captain, it seems congratulations are in order on several counts," the Vulcan says with a regal nod.
[Viewscreen (24440)] Svetzvani smiles. "Thank you," she says, but then looks distractedly back to her terminal. "Is there something pressing that we need to talk about?" she asks T'Shaav.
"No," the Vulcan says. "I wished to advise you that we will begin atmospheric dispersal of the solium hydroxide within the next standard day or less. And we will advise the Cardassians prior to launch." She studies you. "Perhaps there is something I may do for you? I seem to have called at an inopportune time."
[Viewscreen (24440)] Svetzvani holds up a finger as she studies her screen a moment more, then turns to face T'Shaav. "There's a small Cardassian fleet in the Orias system. They were attempting to contact you on a diplomatic Cardassian frequency that has not been widely shared. They're inquiring about the progress on Orias III."
"Indeed?" The Vulcan glances at her terminal. "If it is convenient, may we have that frequency?"
[Viewscreen (24440)] Svetzvani says, "I'll send it over. In the mean time, you may consider contacting them on visual. Also, please inform Admiral Ghandriane that if she would like to beam over, the Da Vinci would be honored to carry her back to Earth."
"I shall do so, on both points."
[Viewscreen (24440)] Svetzvani smiles. "Thanks, T'Shaav. We'll stay and observe while you guys do your magic on the planet."
"Very good, Captain. Phoenix out."
[Viewscreen (24440)] Connection to USS Da Vinci NCC-60456 terminated.
- Main Bridge <USS Phoenix NCC-170100-A>
- The main bridge is divided into three sections. Far to fore is an open area before the large viewscreen. This area also doubles as a walkway between the Captain and XO's offices to starboard and port respectively, the bridge staff breakroom to port, and a doorway to starboard which leads to the forward corridor and the conference room.
- The central section, raised a single step from the forward section, is accessible from both sides. To the fore of this section are the helm and operations stations, with the XO, Captain, and Mission Specialist chairs at aft. The latter three stations are enclosed in a horseshoe like shape.
- To both sides of the central horseshoe shape are ramps that lead up to the highest and largest tier of the bridge. On the starboard side is the engineering station with a large L-shaped console, and the damage control station behind it. To port is the communications station, again with a large L-shaped console, and behind it the science station. At the aft side of the horseshoe shape is the tactical station, and along the back wall are multiple auxiliary stations. Access to the saucer turbolift and a doorway leading aft are also available on this tier.
[XO's Chair: USS Phoenix NCC-170100-A (Council): Cardassian squadron at Orias, stand by for visual contact and an update.]
The Vulcan is in her chair, having apparently just finished one conversation and sent a message.
Coil settles into the science station and pulls up the displays, managing this time not to head for the center chair first.
"Mr. LePage, Mr. Coil, I am told we are ready to proceed. Operations, hail the Cardassian squadron in the system. On screen."
LePage himself heads on over to the engineering display. He chair seems to recline a bit further than most, perhaps modified.
The OPS officer pipes up. "Aye sir, hailing now"
[Viewscreen (24434)] Opening communications channel from Cardassian Keldon Fleet.
"Onscreen" the officer announces.
[Viewscreen (24434)] A Cardassian woman in military uniform is on the other side of the viewer, "You took too long. Always delays, delays, and more delays with you." She is none too pleased to have to deal with Starfleet.
Coil glances at the viewscreen as it comes alive.
"Greetings," the Vulcan says. "We are preparing to launch a series of modified torpedoes into the lower atmosphere of the planet. These torpedoes contain the compound that should restore the world's biosphere. It is my wish that you be advised."
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: Bridge, Doctor Hawthorn's coming up. I told her she wouldn't want to miss this.]
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Ack, thanks. ]
[XO's Chair: T'Shaav's Chair Bridge: Acknowledged and approved.]
LePage taps in a message to the Vulcan, hoping to just catch the corner of her eye
[Viewscreen (24434)] "A trap!" The Cardassian calls out, "We will not sit idly by while you launch torpedoes."
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: They just raised shields sir]
The Vulcan sighs slightly. "We have defused the torpedoes and modified them to carry solium hydroxide compound." She flicks a glance to Coil and then Hawthorn. "My chief science officer and his colleague can better explain. Commander."
Coil rises from his station and turns to the viewscreen, "It's no trap, Glin. The modified torpedoes are designed to distribute the method to restore the biosphere at a planetary level. Your fleet and the others in Cardassian space will be the ones who will likely implement this on the other planets. Unless you want to beam down and do it all by hand everywhere the Cardassian people live."
Hawthorn exits the lift and blinks, looking around at the control room of the ship. The activity and conversation on the screen stops her in her tracks and she just stands uncertainly by the lift door and waits.
LePage keeps an eye on passive sensors, fingers by the text entry on his console
[Viewscreen (24434)] Talalk eyes T'Shaav, "You would be wise to choose your words more carefully, Vulcan. I was about to give the order to destroy you."
[Viewscreen (24434)] Talalk watches Coil as he rises, "And the logic comes from the human. How things have changed in the Federation."
The Vulcan appears singularly unmoved by the Cardassian's bluster. Which is to say, since she's not really moved by anything, this doesn't move her either. "If you are prepared, Glin, we will proceed," she says.
Hawthorn scowls at the oddity of the conversation. "I thought we were about to do science," she says impatiently.
"I'm Trill actually, Glin," Kellen comments. He looks over at Hawthorn, "Hello Doctor, we are, if we're permitted." He turns his gaze back to the viewscreen, "Do you have any questions about the process, Glinn?"
[Viewscreen (24434)] "Only one that matters." Talalk replies, "Will it work?" She signals her bridge crew to stand ready for any mischief. "But you may proceed when ready."
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Payloads are loaded and ready for launch]
The diminutive civilian scientist pulls a face at the Cardassian on the screen and crosses her arms. She holds her tongue though, even if her disgusted expression conveys her feelings clearly.
"We believe so. I will keep this channel open so that you may observe fully," the Vulcan says. Turning to her bridge crew she offers one of them a gift, in a decidedly emotionless and ungiftlike manner. "The payloads are loaded and ready. Mr. LePage will power the launchers we need and no more." Then, "Target and launch at Mr. Coil's command."
[Viewscreen (24434)] "Merely a precaution, Starfleet." Talalk says to the viewer.
LePage goes to power the tubes but his finger freezes over the button when his console flashes at him, the Cardassians arming weapons first. It's a second before his finger thumps onto the console. "Just the essentials, no more, no less"
Hawthorn clicks her tongue and rolls her eyes, then strides over to a nearby auxiliary console. She stands rather than sits at it and punches in her personal code, unsure whether it will open for her.
Coil gestures for Hawthorn to join him at the science station, "Doctor, if you would care to observe the readings as they come in?" He says to the viewscreen, "It will still take time for the results to be visible, Glinn. We're only restoring the biosphere, not accelerating growth." He looks over at LePage, "Let's start with just one, Mr. LePage, to reassure our friends that this is safe. Target the southern hemisphere and launch."
LePage taps in the targeting instructions. "Southern hemisphere, one payload aye". There's a moment before the Engineer presses the button, sending the command to the launcher. Despite being more than a few bulkheads away, it's almost as though the sound of the launcher resonates in everyone's head. "Payload away. On profile descent"
[XO's Chair: USS Phoenix NCC-170100-A launches a lone torpedo which begins to descend towards the planet below, heading for the southern hemisphere. It enters the atmosphere and proceeds to a low altitude before beginning deployment.]
"500 meters to airburst... 300... 150.... Airburst confirmed" LePage reports as the charge shatters the casing and sends the solium hydroxide into the air
Hawthorn frowns, but watches the progress without comment.
[Viewscreen (24434)] Talalk is unimpressed with the display, sad that it is.
Coil turns back to his console and watches the readings, "Solium hydroxide is dispersing throughout the vicinity." He looks over at Hawthorn, "Doctor? Any observations so far?"
[XO's Chair: Orias III is briefly blanketed with a small burst of the solium solution, however the dispersal is nowhere near what was to be expected. Only a small portion of the planet surface was affected.]
[Viewscreen (24434)] "A few thousand more like that, and you'll have some success." Talalk condescendingly remarks.
Still frowning, the tiny Terran woman glances at the Cardassians on the screen, then shakes her head at the Trill. "Not yet. We need to deploy more of the devices before we see much effect." She glares at the viewscreen and appears as if she's about to snap something at the Cardassian, but clicks her teeth shut and returns her attention to the console in front of her instead.
T'Shaav watches, but does not interfere.
LePage monitors the last of the readings from the destroyed pod. "Engineering standing by"
[XO's Chair: Coil Console Bridge: Engineering, any chance you could design a non-destructive dispersal method? My readings are showing that some of the solium hydroxide was destroyed by the burst.]
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Hauser, copy? That's gonna have to be a hot-swap]
Coil looks up from his displays, "This is why we perform tests, Glinn. We could cover the whole planet with those 'thousands' of torpedoes, but that wouldn't look good to anyone watching would it? That method is not as effective as anticipated, so next we'll try a dispersal method that is less...destructive to the torpedo casing and be more reusable and less frightening."
[Viewscreen (24434)] Talalk nods, clearly losing interest in the affair, "You may continue your efforts. However fruitless they are."
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: I think we got something in place... Gonna try and get the wind to rip the capsule apart if we can. ]
"Next payload ready sir" LePage announces.
[XO's Chair: Coil Console Bridge: Non-destructive, Gordon. Make it more like a drone, have it vent the solium hydroxide and be recoverable for refilling and reuse.]
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: I took the charge out, what you're asking for is gonna take another two days of redesign. Feel like we're on the spot here. ]
[XO's Chair: Coil Console Bridge: I asked for those 2 days ago.]
Hawthorn drums her nails on the edge of her console, keeping her big eyes locked on her display.
Coil glances over at LePage before turning his attention back to his displays, "Target outside of the affected area of the last launch and proceed, Mr. LePage."
"Adjusting target.... Payload away" LePage says as the next payload leaves the ship. Anyone looking terribly closer will note this one doesn't look quite as well put together, the panel gaps a little larger. As it enters the atmosphere, it's apparent that a small crude shield unit has been fitted to it. "300 meters... 100..." The Engineer notes. Once the payload hits it's target altitude, the shield drops out and the pod starts to rattle itself apart, going to pieces and sending the solium into the air.
[XO's Chair: Cardassian Keldon Fleet targets the second torpedo, but was slow in doing so. If it had been hostile, it would have taken them by surprise.]
[XO's Chair: Orias III is once again blanketed with the solium solution. This time the dispersal is over a wider area, but still below what simulations indicated.]
[Viewscreen (24434)] Talalk asks, bored, "How many more of these are there?"
Hawthorn can hold her tongue no longer. "As many as it takes to help your people," she snaps at the screen. "You're welcome." She glares at the Cardassian, then sighs and returns her attention to her display. "Better results, but still under expectations," she says to no one specific.
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: Hauser to bridge. I've been following. I have IR replicating something a little more drone like. Want me to send it up for loading and into the tubes?]
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Please, thank you and PDQ. ]
Coil nods in agreement with Hawthorn, "A traditional torpedo approach isn't working." He looks over at LePage, "Have we got the other option ready to try?"
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: Thought so, which is why I already have them ready. 90 seconds, sirs.]
"We're loading it up now, going over some checks" LePage notes. "About 60 seconds".
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Signal when ready]
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: Hauser Go, sirs. Hope these work. IR is on hot stand by to redo the replication patterns again if we need. But go.]
"Ready to go sir" LePage reports out loud.
T'Shaav says, "By all means, gentlemen.
Coil works at his console a little bit, "Configuring the flightpath for the different methodology. Southern hemisphere again, beyond where the first two attempts went." He finishes his inputs, "Let her go, Gordon."
"Loading flightpath.... Loaded." The Engineer notes. He presses the button, releasing the new style payload. "It's away" LePage states. The new drone-like pod falls to the planet and slices into the atmosphere, adjusting it's flight surfaces to maintain a longer glidepath as it begins to disperse the solium hydroxide along a larger lateral path.
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: Is it working?]
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Wait one, I'll let you know just as soon as I do. ]
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: Aye.]
[XO's Chair: Orias III is once again blanketed by the solium solution, the dispersal spreading out across the southern hemisphere.]
[Viewscreen (24434)] Talalk harumpfs, "Some success, finally. We will continue to monitor."
[Viewscreen (24434)] Connection from Cardassian Keldon Fleet terminated.
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Well, you impressed the toughest customer. More of those please. ]
T'Shaav says, "status report.
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: 3 minutes to the tubes, mark.]
Hawthorn perks up a little. "There's a cloud trail stretching for several kilometers in the southeastern section, grid 7. The cloud is expanding out in a lateral sheet and drifting to the top soil."
"Better results, Commander," Kellen reports. "How effective will depend on less visible factors." He looks over at Hawthorn, "So this method is promising then, Doctor?"
T'Shaav nods, her patience undisturbed as ever.
LePage sighs a little. "Got more of those kind in the works"
[XO's Chair: Hauser Console Engineering - Deck 28: Tubes loaded. Next lot in replication now.]
"It shows more promise than what I came up with," Hawthorn says. "If you have enough devices and hydroxide, I don't see any reason we can't eventually cover all of the effected areas."
T'Shaav says, "I believe our replicators are up to the task, Doctor."
"We've got the stuff Doctor, if we're fine to proceed, I believe we can give the manual to our respective teams and keep an eye on it" LePage says.
"We'll work on making the design more accessible for construction" LePage nods.
T'Shaav says, "One step at a time, gentlemen. Let us ensure success here. Then the Diplomatic Corps can help us pass along suitable designs to the Detapa Council and the Cardassian military at large." She studies the planet on the screen. "At present rates, what is our estimated time to completion assuming we work uninterrupted?"
Coil looks over at Hawthorn, "How soon do you think we'll be able to tell if the distribution of solium hydroxide within the topsoil is adequate? I'd hate to make more attempts until we know it's actually accomplishing what we desire."
LePage taps on his console to shunt the data and performance figures over to Coil. "Sending you the telemetry from that run to calculated estimated time remaining to optimal saturation and disperal sir"
Hawthorn shrugs. "How soon can you get a team down there to take some readings up close? Maybe a sample or two? The experiments run leading up to this point should provide the basis to answer that question, you just need the data showing the measureable results of this one."
Coil nods to Hawthorn, "Agreed, Doctor. I'll send people down shortly to get your readings and samples." He replies to LePage, "While the physics and geology are within my skillset, the biology and botany aren't. Which is why we have specialists in those areas on board now, such as the good Doctor here."
"That is a logical idea," the Vulcan says. "An away team can be dispatched during Alpha Shift. I will send the chief medical officer or his deputy down as well, Doctor hawthorn. If there is nothing else, I need reports immediately with our procedure and progress, particularly from you, Commander Coil."
"Or some other good doctor elsewhere," says Hawthorn. "I'm not a botanist."
T'Shaav says, "If there is nothing else, you are all free to leave the bridge at your discretion and carry on elsewhere as needed. As for me, I must find an admiral."
[XO's Chair: LePage Console Bridge: Good work Hauser. Debrief in my office. ]
Hawthorn takes one more look around the bridge, then says, "Thanks for having me," then hits the lift.
