The Alita-class was initially commissioned as a heavy escort carrier, designed to carry multiple wings of attack fighters to an intended target for fast deployment and recovery. The design was part of a new wave of Starfleet vessels along with the Europa-class and Buran-class.

History

Initial testing showed the class was not up to the task as an escort carrier, and additional vessels were not commissioned. Years later, leftover hulls from the initial program were repurposed as Medical Frigates. The bay configuration for the class was perfectly suited for medical shuttle deployment and recovery. Many of the internal designs for fighter flight crews, were redesigned for triage and medical facilities.
