Command
Commanding Officer
Possible Ranks: Captain and Commander
Line Officer Required: Yes
Description: The commanding officer holds ultimate responsibility for the ship and crew under his or her command. Appointed by Starfleet, the commanding officer is charged with the execution of all orders assigned to the ship. He or she is also solely responsible for the safety of the crew under his or her command. The commanding officer has the final say in all matters aboard ship. By Starfleet tradition, the commanding officer is referred to as Captain, regardless of rank.
Mission Advisor
Possible Ranks: Commander, Lieutenant Commander, Lieutenant, and Lieutenant (jg)
Line Officer Required: No
Description: A mission advisor is assigned at the behest of Starfleet Command and may be assigned with or without prior consultation with the commanding officer. Typically, the mission advisor is a higher ranking officer with both subject matter expertise and experience, such as a former command officer skilled in the tactics of a specific foe or a diplomatic officer with prior experience in negotiations. In rare occasions, the mission advisor may be assigned to the ship for an extended period of time, but the role is often unfilled unless needed and assigned for a particular mission. Alternatively, the commanding officer may choose to fill the position with someone from within the existing roster who has expertise related to the current mission. The function of the mission advisor is to provide guidance and share insight that may be helpful in successfully accomplishing the mission at hand.
CO's Yeoman
Possible Ranks: Lieutenant, Lieutenant (jg), and Ensign
Line Officer Required: No
Description: Typically junior administrative officers, ship-board yeoman will ultimately take their place in the bureaucracy of Starfleet Headquarters as administrators, adjutants, and personnel officers. However, during their time aboard ship, they are assigned as personal assistants to a command-level officer. The position often exposes the officer to sensitive information, so Yeoman are often highly trusted by the command officer to whom they are assigned.
Executive Officer
Possible Ranks: Commander and Lieutenant Commander
Line Officer Required: Yes
Description: The executive officer, sometimes referred to as the first officer or "Number One", is second-in-command. The executive officer is charged with implementing the orders issued by the commanding officer, personnel matters including signatory authority on performance reviews and interdepartmental transfers, management and allocation of resources, and advising the commanding officer. All departments, through their respective department heads, report to the executive officer.
Chief Flight Controller
Possible Ranks: Commander, Lieutenant Commander, Lieutenant, and Lieutenant (jg)
Line Officer Required: Yes
Description: The chief flight controller is the ship's senior pilot. The chief flight controller is not only the ship's principal pilot, but he or she also supervises all junior flight controllers and shuttle pilots assigned to the vessel. Technically, the chief flight control officer is not a senior officer, but the position may be designated as a senior officer position at the discretion of the commanding officer.
Flight Control Officer
