Luz Elena Castillo Valera is a Lieutenant in Starfleet, serving aboard the USS Phoenix NCC-170100-A as the Chief of Operations and Maintenance Engineer.

Description

Luz is a human woman with a rosy complexion and modest stature. She might be the first to point out she's slightly taller than the mean, but a first glance likely wouldn't give the impression. In a crowd, her form isn't going to cause her to stick out.

Golden brown hair frames the edges of her face, at least in the places she's allowed it to fall. It's been sheared short, especially on her right side. Her hair has been drawn back asymmetrically, pulled tight, with the help of pins and a hair tie. She has a twin set of amber eyes, the color of which may appear to match her hair...the thin contrast only truly apparent in the brightest light.

Biography

Luz Elena Castillo Valera was born in the city of Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, Earth, on Feb 10, 2428. She's the only child of Maria Isabel Valera Romero, an ardent law clerk, and Juan Pablo Castillo Alonso, a respected precinct captain. Her two parents worked opposing schedules to allow for someone to always be present for her.

The neighborhood in her youth was vibrant with close sense of community. Much of her time was spent in class, but football felt like it dominated her childhood. Football is more than a game in Rosario, to some, it might as well be a religion. Her parents being diehard fans made Luz a fan herself. Throughout her youth, Luz was an eager participant in the local football clubs, dedicated to the sport even when it required long hours and time away from home.

Shining in secondary school, Luz's ruminating sense of adventure led her to enroll in an engineering program with the University of Alpha Centauri. Although her family supported her from afar, having never left Earth prior to her enrollment, the initial sting of such a distant separation was difficult for her to manage. While away, She did well with her coursework and participated in multiple academic life organizations. Over time, she made new friends and made due with her home away from home. In the last year of her coursework, her father retired and had time to join her on occasion, traveling back and forth between Earth to keep her connected to the remainder of the family on earth.

After having graduated with a Bachelor's in Material Science and Engineering, Luz returned home to earth. With her father's connections, she secured a project management position with the city's transportation department. For a year and a half, Luz balanced resources and demands for roadway projects and urban growth. As time passed, she felt a void in her heart, a piece of her that was missing the excitement of being away from home while living in Alpha Centauri. She decided it was time to leave once more and do something a little bigger than work for her hometown.

Using her prior experience and by passing the entrance exam, Luz was accepted for admission into the Starfleet Academy on Earth. Luz elected to become an operations generalist, focusing more on her prior work experience in resource management. With consideration to her education, Luz was able to qualify for an extension engineering program in lieu of the basics coursework. At this point in her life, her attitude towards athletics, namely football, had began to wane. She was less invested and did not have the enthusiasm to participate in any of the sporting clubs. She kept her head low and buried in her work, choosing not to be as openly competitive as she was in her early youth.

While at the academy, Luz refined her understanding of engineering and worked at growing her organizational skills.

Luz put her prior education and intelligence to good use and excelled while at the academy, graduating in the upper half of her class.
