Biography

Phillip Nathan Sawyer was born just outside Hattiesburg, Mississippi on one of the hottest days in living memory. He grew up with both parents and, later, a younger sister, Louisa. The family led a life of mixed high and low tech. His mother loves the convenience of a replicator, for example, but his father loves to garden and to hunt, at least within the strict limits of local laws on the subject.

From a young age, Phil liked to bring small animals home to see what they ate, and to try to mend them when they got hurt. In school in central Hattiesburg, he excelled in history, music, and English, not exactly what one expects of a future doctor. Then again, he had no idea what he wanted to be and was honest enough to admit it. He didn't graduate at the top of his class, but he did well enough so that Alabama State gave him a chance.

While in college, Phil started out with a double major in booze and hellraising, and shining success at this strenuous course of study earned him a semester's suspension. Eventually, he changed majors, landing on a combo of history and psychology, more sensible than advanced alcohol studies. Still, while minds were interesting, it was his memories of living close to the land, of animals both hunted and healed, that pushed Phil towards applying to med school. By age 28, he had completed his M.D. at Ole Miss and was looking to settle down to a quiet practice and start a family, often admittedly a boring existence to contemplate unless it happens to be yours.

The problem was the wrong woman. Settling in the hills of eastern Kentucky, Phil started his practice in the mountains near Harlan and married Alexis Ammons, a Cincinnati lady who, everyone tried to tell him, it would have been better if he'd never met.

At first, he didn't realize that his wife hadn't left her party phase behind. Phil's practice consumed much of his time, and as a result, he blamed her first affair on himself. When his daughter, Jessica, was born in 2425, the second affair had just ended, and Phil didn't have the heart to get a DNA scan. He hoped, naively, that the presence of a child would settle his wife down to motherhood and adulthood.

When Jessica was five, Phil came home to find her mother in bed with yet another man, this time someone they had known for several years. That was the end of their marriage, and Alexis took the child back to Ohio.

Visitation rights are not the same as being a family, and broken souls are beyond medicine's ability to heal. Phil Sawyer realized as time went by that he needed a change, a big one. In late 2432, he enrolled in the Starfleet Officer's Training Program for medical personnel. This six-month program prepared the already practicing doctor to transition both to military service and to space medicine. He took accelerated courses in xeno-anatomy, space psychology, starship functions, the military protocols of Starfleet medicine, and various other medical, protocol, and military courses that would give him the tools he needed to function as a Starfleet physician. He graduated in early 2433 with a Starfleet polishing on his medical skills and the most acidic tongue this side of a Bolian.

While the doctor never hesitates to speak his mind, he tends to be silent about why he left Earth, and his acerbic disposition, or his charm-whichever the situation calls for-usually keeps that topic at bay. How things will play out with his estranged young daughter, he also doesn't know. Meanwhile, his anachronistic-looking black leather doctor's bag is packed, and his private bar is stowed as he awaits orders and transportation to anywhere.
